Established in 1983, Eastern Illinois Foodbank has over 200 agencies that serve approximately 5,500 hungry people each week. In 2003, the Foodbank distributed over 4 million pounds of food through these agencies and through programs such as the FoodMobile, a client-choice mobile pantry. In the 14 counties served by the Eastern Illinois Foodbank, 62,000 people (12.9 percent) are at risk of hunger. In any given week, more than 91,300 people rely on the food provided by the Greater Chicago Food Depository. In addition to distribution of food through 600 member agencies, the Greater Chicago Food Depository administers the following programs: Chicago's Community Kitchens, an intensive, 12-week food service training program for the unemployed/underemployed; 12 Kids Cafes - 37 percent of people receiving food from the Food Depository are children; the Producemobile, a farmers' market on wheels, bringing fresh fruits and vegetables directly to those in need; Food Rescue; and Produce People Share, distributing 6 million pounds of produce in FY01-02. Established in 1983, Northern Illinois Food Bank serves more than 158,400 people monthly through a network of 236 agencies. Last year, more than 10.5 million pounds of food was distributed. In addition to distribution of food through member agencies, Northern Illinois Food Bank administers the Summertime Kids Lunch program, After School Snack program, Food Rescue in four counties, the Holiday Meal Box program and the Mobile Market, a traveling pantry bringing food directly to those in need.
